Kris, the problem here - with imitating google and amazon - is that Apple doesn't stand a chance of doing it better. They'll almost certainly fail embarrassingly, just as they did with maps.
The iPad was the tablet the market was waiting for, because everyone else had done it badly. Ditto the iPhone. Now, though, Apple are copying amazon and google, two companies that have done what they do very well. Apple cannot do it dramatically better.
I suspect Apple are looking - maybe desperately - for something to do with all that cash and making some hasty and very possibly bad decisions.

Despite being a company who has had a long dry spell (according to you David), they are still selling products by the freighter-full and are, I believe, the richest company in the world.
Perhaps your view is too jaundiced? They seem to be doing very well without your advice.
Well, time will tell. But if Apple want to retain the great goodwill of the media and keep selling their goods by the freighter-full, they'll have to start coming up with a few bright, sparkling, new original ideas. There's been a long dry spell.
I think. Great minds think alike. These huge tech corporations. They hire alike. The consult from the same minds. Etc. they know where to go. So. They are all going there. Some people do some things faster. Google will be better at data mining and using the mined data to create better data solutions. Apple is better taking user experience and forward thinking ideas and creating solutions that consumers overwhelmingly appreciate buy buying them in droves.
These theories converge in areas and diverge in others. But not necessarily because if imitation. Because of similar forward thinking goals they are attempting to reach.
Apple wasntcopyinggoogle when they decided to create maps. Google promised and then delayed multiple features of Google miss for iOS while its own version was iterations ahead. Google was purposefully delaying solutions to give itself a heads up on apple.

Despite their previous quarrels, Apple and Samsung will reportedly work together on the A9 processor, which will arrive on the iPhone 6S. Samsung reportedly started production on the A9 processor in mid-December, based on reports from Korea's ET News. The chip will be manufactured using 14nm FinFET technology, which should use 35 percent less energy and offer 20 percent more power.
Twenty percent's not much. I'll wait for the next generation.
iPad Air 3 Dubbed iPad 7 to Release Before Christmas? Monster Specs Include A9 Processors, 4K Res with 401 PPL; Samsung Rumored to Develop Own Chips

Apple's next flagship tablet, iPad Air 3, which may be dubbed iPad 7, will be released in November 2015. Release date conclusion drawn from the gadget's preceding Apple tablets release dates, which were always before Christmas shopping season begins.
According to ExpertReviews, there is a trend to the release dates of iPad models. Since 2012, these Apple gadgets have been release either late October or early November. This is a smart marketing strategy to invite people to purchase the mobile device as gift for Christmas. This means, the iPad Air could pretty much be released on these dates. The new iPad 7 or iPad Air 3 is also rumored to be released along with Apple's iOS9.
ITPro reports that iPad 7 is rumored to be thinner than iPad Air 2. It could be only 9.7in and 6.1mm thick. This means it needs some tweaking to fit a strong but small battery. The iPad Air 3 could have the A9 processor, 2GB memory, and 4k resolution with 401 ppl. This are the same specs that the iPhone 6 Plus have.
Bloomberg reports that Samsung Electronics Co. will manufacture Apple's A9 processors, according to certain people who has knowledge of this transaction but asked the news agency to remain anonymous.
This deal will help Samsung regain the customers it lost to the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. This deal will definitely help Samsung rebound against TSMC in the $300 billion-worth semiconductor industry.
Speaking of Samsung, the Korean mobile giant recently released its Samsung Galaxy S6 March 1 of this year. In Samsung's official website, Mashable claims that it is "arguably the most advanced smartphone ever made." While Forbes said "The curved screen shows a bold attempt to redefine the way smartphones are designed and used."
The new iPad Air 3 or iPad 7 will have a 7-in screen with 3GB RAM. It could also possibly feature waterproof and dustproof capabilities. However, these are just rumors and Apple has not yet officially confirmed these features.
