No the modem/router wouldn't care that the ATV doesn't have any status lights. So the ATV works fine even though the light is red? Have you checked the light when you have the ATV on and playing?

No, the ATV works fine.  I wonder whether the red light (which is on the device side, not the cable side - apologies for confusing that) may be due to the ATV's not having status lights at all.  Maybe ethernet is complaining about the absence?
