Yep. Did that just now. Connected cable to modem/router, then connected other end to ATV and restarted ATV and played a movie. While movie was playing, the modem/router light on the port to which to cable was connected was blinking red/orange about twice a second. The other light - usually green - was dark. Movie played fine. (The ATV response seemed sluggish, but since I very seldom watch TV (it's my wife's thing), I don't know that that's not normal.)
No the modem/router wouldn't care that the ATV doesn't have any status lights. So the ATV works fine even though the light is red? Have you checked the light when you have the ATV on and playing?

No, the ATV works fine. I wonder whether the red light (which is on the device side, not the cable side - apologies for confusing that) may be due to the ATV's not having status lights at all. Maybe ethernet is complaining about the absence?

When I connect the Time-Warner router/modem to the ATV, the ethernet cable light at the modem end that should be green turns red. The signal seems fine - the connection seems solid and consistent - but that red light bothers me. When I connect the same cable to my PC, the light's green, so it's not a bad cable.

Could it just be that the Apple TV is still "asleep" ?
