Not sure about the US or elsewhere but here in NZ these practices are frowned upon. Our consumer authorities are I think in the process of outlawing this practice in favour of a very clear opt out at time of joining a trial service, The issue is that many users will forget to cancel, get a bill, cancel, them have had to pay a bill they never asked for .
