I will give you a slightly different angle. It really boils down to what your needs are and how you are going to meet those needs.
I traveled with just my iPad for over three weeks. I have a 64g, wifi. I was dependent on hotel, free wifi at hotels and restaurants, and wifi at my daughters apartment.. We traveled during the week and then the weekend at ky daughters.
I was pleased to discover that I could download apps and check email with very little problems or inconveniences. We only stayed at one mom and pop type place where Internet access was a bit time of day dependent. Besides email and apps, I was able to keep an extensive travel journal, import 30 gs of pictures, and edit a couple of pictures and then post them on the web.
During this time, about 90% of my connection needs were met.
There are things the an iPad just can't do. For example, I could do simple edits to my photos, but I couldn't use light room or Photoshop for more sophisticated stuff. I am ok with that; you just have to realize it's a mobile device that occasionally needs to be tethered to a computer for updates and back-ups. And if you want more sophisticated computing and multiple windows opened simultaneously.

She lives at a distance from me & I'm wondering if there is any way a person could maintain an iPad if they don't own a computer. Any ideas? She seemed to catch on to using the iPad very quickly. Thanks for any suggestions.
