I'm trying to decide to get refurbished minis in the fall or regular iPads. 

Sounds like you tried everything i would have tried.

Kris, I tried DFU mode and recovery boot. My computer could not find the iPad.
I am going to the Apple Mac Outpost to see if there is anything else that can be done.
A refurbished mini iPad 4 would be an update for me, less expensive and the size I want, although they will not be made anymore. 
Don't need anything fancy, still have an iPod nano 1st gen which functions well, but no Bluetooth! Don't use it much though. But it is a good place to store my music.
