I had an elderly friend who, I thought, would be a natural for an iPad. Very smart, chemist, constant reader. He eventually learned to use mail, but that was it.

As we age, some of us - maybe most - resist learning new routines. For one thing, the brain simply shrinks. We can't escape that. And some people more than others seem to need foolproof checklists. "Foolproof" is the problem here. Nothing with personal computers is foolproof, because they're designed to do a great many different things using a small instruction set. You need to develop a skill and an instinct for using them well, and that may not be possible for some people with diminishing cognitive capacity.

Good luck with your friend. I think you may have to settle for small victories. Think large, but be willing to settle for less than you'd like.
