I'd almost have sworn that had been my experience, but I experimented just now with a thread in which I wasn't participating, and I could delete just one message, instead of all of them.
It may behave differently with a dead thread, to coin a phrase, than with one in which you're currently engaged. I don't know, really. Experiment, I guess, and hope it's consistent.
