I bought a 3G, then a 3GS, then a 4, then a 4S, then skipped 5 and bought a 5S, then a 6+ (for specific features).
I am the heavy app user in the house, so I get the newest device, and my wife gets my retiring device. And old ones are retained for emergencies (breakage replacements, for example). By the time they are 3 years old, they aren't worth much in trade-in or resale.
I haven't decided yet with regard to getting this fall's "+" phone, or wait until 2017.
