Never forget that not all of R&D ends up in the hands of consumers. No small part of it, depending on the industry and the company, may "end up on the cutting room floor" — meaning there was what appeared to be a marvelous idea, if they can make it work and make it reliable, but after researching it and developing for 2 years, they finally determine that it cannot be done — or not now, not reliably, not to their standards.
