Somehow. In this third world country, Costa Rica , arguably maybe second world status, people have loads of iPhones. The Mexican nationals that are volunteering at the rescue center all have newer iPads than myself.
IME people tend to buy what they want before what they need. Hence gadgets before better food. Etc.
