I have a SanDisk external USB 2.0 reader, two Compact Flash card slots in my LCD display, and a couple of $3 multi-card readers from Meritline.com. They all work perfectly. The most important factor is simply making sure the reader supports whatever format your camera uses (SD, SDHC, Micro SD, Memory Stick, Compact Flash, MMC, xD, etc, etc).

Pop the card out of the camera, insert into your card reader, and if it's not connected already, plug that into the Mac. The standard OS X setup will probably recognize it's a camera card, launch iPhoto, and ask to import your images. You can usually choose here to let iPhoto delete the images from the card after import (I do now), but it may be safer to delete the images using your camera once you put the card back in it.

The most important thing here: Don't just yank the card out when the transfer is complete. Either within iPhoto or on the desktop, first "Eject" the card (look for a little Eject symbol or right-click on the desktop). After you do that, and its icon disappears on the Mac, it will then be safe to remove the card. Otherwise, the Mac may still be "talking" to it and removal can cause corruption of the data.
