As a dyed-in-the-wool-hot reactor (reacter in this context?) especially with my Macs, I can say experience has taught me that first impressions of fault are frequently wrong and that a deep breath instead of anger usually leads to better troubleshooting.
Never was nor inclined to be, a smoker, but Dentyne is a decent substitute.
I hope the OP is right, that there is a temporary cloud problem, at worst. Nice thing about IMAP--they keep your mail basically forever absent a century storm.

BTW--I still despise many of the appearance and ergometric changes in OSX over OS9. But I do love its crash resistance (not -proof, resistance; Finder crashed earlier this eve), multi-tasking and other actual improvements.
