I would recommend all of the mac type apps, pages, keynote, were important. I had no problem using them back and forth with Word or Powerpoint.
I did not have a need for numbers.app, I also recommend fast board app. I like it because I can drag anything on my mac to fast board and it appears on my ipad. then I can designate which app I want to open it in.
I didnt see any students with ipads but I suppose thats not too surprising, I did see a number of profs with them.
