Is iOS 4.3 the most recent you can run on your iPad? This website for older iOS apps shows the iPad 1 with iOS 5.1.1

I have a 1st gen ipad with lots of pictures saved on it and lots of pdf files in ibooks. I want to download these to my pc, but itunes doesn't recognise it.
The ipad has the 4.3 ios software on it now.
Is there any way I can retreive these pictures ?
I have the latest itunes on my pc & I have replaced the ipad cable also. I have restarted the pc and the ipad , but no luck.
I took it to the local Apple Genius Bar , but they were no help.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
