Re: [iPad] Apple acquires virtual assistant maker VocalIQ to bolster Siri’s conversational skills | 9to5Mac

Artificial intelligence and voice recognition are baby technologies, and the immaturity shows painfully in halting attempts, like Siri, to make them commercially viable.

True artificial intelligence doesn't exist, and may never.
Expert systems are getting better and better.

I like the old definition of Artificial Intelligence (given in my first text book of AI by Elaine Rich)

"AI is trying to make computers do things where currently humans do better than computers".

That sounds like a good definition of what I would call "expert systems" — IBM's Watson can play Jeopardy, or Chess, better than humans, but while it could be called "knowledgable", it isn't "intelligent".

To me, "artificial intelligence" is an electronic system that is sentient — including self aware.

Hm. I hope those software-created transcriptions are checked for accuracy.

Well, of course they are. But isn't that inefficient? A text is being put together on an automated assembly line, and then a quality-assurance person is obliged to listen to the source document all over again, checking the machine's every letter to try to ensure that no one dies from a mistranslated sound.

It seems to me that you're likely not saving a huge amount of money. Of course, if you save just a penny for every hundred or so documents, that probably matters in the end to the bean counters.

"AI is trying to make computers do thing where currently Humans do better than computers".
This is an evergreen definition.

From that point of view, AI will always have targets to attain.

If computers can play better chess, they still lag behind humans in game of Go.

Voice recognition has been in daily use in business (specifically, in medicine, which I know about) for years.

Re: [iPad] Copying photos from PC to iPad

It does but then you need a big software like iTunes for that which is not need otherwise.
iTunes is a relic of times before iOS started every thing OTA.

I think the easiest method is to mail them to yourself.
Alternately, there are Apps for file transfer.

I should probably know this by now but, How do I copy a photo from my Win 7 PC to my iPad?

I have the two connected via a USB cable.  On the PC I can see the iPad.  I tried dragging and dropping but that didn't seem to work.

TIA,

[iPad] European Parliament votes to shield Snowden from extradition to US | Ars Technica

Thanks, Bill Martin:

<<
By a vote of 285 to 281, the European Parliament passed a nonbinding resolution today calling on member states to "drop any criminal charges against Edward Snowden, grant him protection, and consequently prevent extradition or rendition by third parties." The move is a "recognition of his status as whistle-blower and international human rights defender.
