To charge it.

To back it up ONLY.

To sync it, but only *after* adjusting sync parameters (which media, for example), which you cannot do prior to connecting it to your computer.

I do file sharing as well as syncing when I plug in.

I even plug in & file-share with iTunes on a PC that I do not sync to.

Also, with multiple devices, I'm often twiddling with content options.
Or, with phone & Touch, just topping off the power w/o taking the time to
sync.

jim is right.  I don't allow automatic syncing of any of our devices.  I prefer, and recommend, that you do a backup of your device before syncing or upgrades.  if anything goes 'kaboom' during the sync you can restore your device to it's previous state.
