All you have to do is plug your iPad into your computer and that's it.  iTunes will automagically do all the work for you just like iCloud does.  Simple!

Jim,
When I backup my iPad to my computer, I can watch the progress on the progress bar at the top middle of the iTunes screen.  You are right, it doesn't tell you (in words) when it is complete, but the progress bar disappears when it is done.

Few Rules you must follow :

1) Do NOT post more that 1 message a day.
