My iPad did the same thing. I thought something serious had gone wrong. I had to power cycle it to get it back.

That's it. I've tried to turn it off in settings/display-and-brightness and by swiping down from the top right, holding the brightness control, and toggling it off. Nada.
No idea what turned it on. I was just reading the morning paper, when, pop, everything went dark. Annoying.
