Re: [iPad] iPad addiction and withdrawal - why Apple's tablet dominatesAppleTell

No.  It just plugs into a cig lighter.

I considered that for mine as well, but haven't.

There are good, detailed, articles online and discussions in the Yahoo Prius forums on the subject.

If all you want to do is charge batteries, you don't have to be too particular about what you get.

If you want to actually run AC electronics from it, you want to seek out "pure sine wave power".

I have this one.  Works well.

That would need to be fused and hard-wired into a separate 40-amp circuit.
Ouch!
Is this in your car or in an RV?

I love it and take it out when I want to use my iPad, which is often. It is about the size of an iPhone. So far I have only powered 5 at a time.

Carol: have you ever looked at the ATT site to see how much data you use, monthly?

All 3 of the iPhones on my account started with unlimited service; only 1 still has it. That person streams radio all day at work, and typically runs up about 2 GB of data. The others never come anywhere near. Dropping the unlimited has saved money.

If you live where there are frequent power outages, it could be sensible to keep a good-sized backup battery fully charged.  It could be used every day as a power conditioner for a laptop or desktop, then when the power grid fails, it could be used only to feed the iPad or iPhone.

How can I figure out how much backup capacity would give you me much iPad time?  Must be a simple equation, but I'm clueless.

I don't see a problem except for over-dependence on the presence of

Maybe such hardships as writer reported are a good reminder to have a backup
plan for off-line working; he appears to have a backup plan for power-outage
situation.

I don't have a generator (I live in a city condo apt) but I do have backup
batteries for emergency recharging, and if a storm is headed here I make
sure everything is charged up, synced, & content-loaded!
