I pay $1/mo for the 50 GB plan; I back up 2 iPhones and 2 iPads to it; and I have 23 GB free.
Since I regularly backup my photos to my main computer, I do NOT send then to iCloud, and I do NOT do the thing with all my Data and Documents in the cloud.
I also regularly backup my devices to my main computer, as well as the cloud.
