Apple should have been able to replace your battery? Saying that your only option was to buy another $300 iPad is ridiculous. From what I understand, the people that work the Genius Bar have more leeway than they will admit to for things they can do for you. The nicer you are too the Genius Bar employees, the more they'll do for you. At least that's how it works for me.

Same here. Can't say why, except that my old iPad is still performing nicely.
Well, it's performing nicely with the necessary assistance of an outboard battery. The internal battery gives only three or four hours of life. I may have mentioned that when I took it to the Apple store to get that fixed, two salesmen told me my only option was to spend $300 for a replacement iPad. External battery cost about $50.
