Just dawned on me I can't figure out how to type fractions on here, like 1/2, 3/4, 5/8 etc. Can't find them on the standard keyboard or app store. Is there a proper way?
Janet.
Those that you typed in this email display fine for me.

I presume Janet means like this: ½ ⅓ ⅔ ¼ ¾ and so forth.
I use:
Settings —> General —> Keyboard —> Text Replacement
where I have the versions that I show above entered as "corrections" for the versions Janet entered.
Now how to key them into Text Replacement in the first place…
In my case, I created the shortcuts on my Mac, which shares them with my devices through iCloud – and entering them on the Mac is quite straightforward using the Character Viewer application.
If you go to the App Store on your iPad and search for "Unicode Keyboard" you should find a free app that includes these (½ ⅓ ⅔ ¼ ¾ ⅕ ⅖ ⅗ ⅘ ⅙ ⅚ ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞ ⅟ – I just did exactly that – and thousands more).
I would use the special keyboard to enter the desired characters in Text Replacements, so all you would have to do in the future is type the fraction normally, and the "correct" fraction would appear in your text.
You can also do this for other special characters, such as:
