Try a tap and hold on the tab button (two overlapping squares on the top right of your screen) to get a choice to close split view or to merge all tabs.

I have anew ipad pro 10.5. I am getting 2 different web pages (side by side) when I use Safari. How do I get back to one web site per screen? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
