Nothing should affect anything else running from the router -- each
device connected to the router has its own connection which should be at
full speed. That is unless your house is incredibly connected and
you've got huge downloads/uploads going from hundreds of devices at the
same time, which I doubt.
My son is a very avid online gamer, and when he's home from college and
playing online, nothing that I or my wife or our daughter does has any
effect on the speed of his connection, and we're all online practically
all the time.
So tell your dh to get his head back in the game and not to worry. :-)
