For just phone calls and maybe texting look at companies like Tracfone/Net10 and Straight Talk. If you use use a phone for emergencies you could be happy with an inexpensive Tracfone and a cost of $20 every 3 months or about $80 a year.
Straight Talk has two plans, one is $30 a month for 1000 min, 1000 text and a tiny amount of internet. $45 gets you unlimited phone/text and more internet. Not fancy phones. Last fall they had an online special for a refurbished slider keyboard phone and a $30 month card for the $30, so the phone was free.
Other plans like Page Plus or Pure Talk are also good. On those plans if you have a current non contract phone that works on their network then you just buy the monthly plan. You can also buy a phone from them. Don't believe a non contract iPhone will work.

My cell phone does not do texting. It is just for making or getting calls and that's it. It's about 11 years old.Carol******************************************************************************Since I take my ipad everywhere and mainly use my cellphone as a phone
and for texting, I want a no-frills cellphone that has a battery that
gets me through a couple a days on a single charge. My Epic Android
battery sucks; though the iPhone foes handle battery usage better.
The only thing I do use that I would on your phone is the navigation
GPS feature.
