As an aside - if you got your Mi-Fi with your iPad, they may have you on some type of restricted plan.  The trick is to convert the Mi-Fi to a pre-paid plan. Then you can activate it for anywhere from 24 hours to 30 days.  That's what I do when we travel with my laptop & my wife's iPad.

Verizon charges a monthly fee for their "MiFi" device. And while it is supposedly monthly & no contract, you can't just drop it and come back when ever u want.

I think the extra charge for the hotspot is limited to the iPhone. Verizon has other phone with hotspots and they don't charge extra.
