Often wherever you download your book from it will show you the file
size, which is how much space it will take up on your iPad. If you're
getting the books from Project Gutenberg (which now has ePub versions
which include all the illustrations for lots of its books!) they show
the size. Since you say you've been reading them on your computer, you
can find the size simply by looking at the files using Windows Explorer
(if you're on a windows machine) or whatever the equivalent program is
on a Mac.

How many you can fit depends on the file size, which makes it hard to
answer your question clearly. My 64GB model shows 59GB available for
storage (the iOS taking the remaining space), so I'll guess that a 32GB
model will have about 27GB available for storage. How many will fit
also depends on how many apps you have and how big those apps are.

1 GB of storage will hold approximate 1000 books if each of the books is
1MB in size. If your books are simply text, then they are likely more
around 250KB in size, so 1MB would hold 4 such books, so 1GB could hold
4,000 such books, and 25GB could hold 100,000 such books. If your books
have lots of graphics in them, they might be 10MB in size (this is just
an example) so 1GB could only hold 100 such books.

Even if they're graphically intensive books, you can put a lot on your
32GB iPad.
