GPS does, but probably not as much as continually connecting by cellular data to download maps as you go along.
Consider an app that includes, or lets you choose, which maps to download, and do the (possibly multi-gigabyte) map download ONCE. You could the leave cellular data (at least for the mapping app) turned off.
