Welcome aboard.

No, the Apple environment generally does not need virus protection.   That's one of the wonderful advantages of a Mac computer :)    The iPad's environment is even safer.

No cleaning/defragging/etc. is required.   There are no hard drives in the iPad and you really can't get to the file system.

As for other cases, it depends on how you handle it.  Toss it in the trunk of the car?   Probably, LOL.  For everyday use around the home, I just use the Apple sleeve.  When traveling, I use an old laptop case with a handle that provides more protection.   Stores have a variety of cases.

Screen protectors?   Again, depends on how rough you are with it.   I've had mine since May, no screen protector and no problems.   But when my wife got hers in early November, we did buy a screen protector for it.
