The iPhone handles mail like the iPad does, including attachments.

Subject: [iPad] Email
So, boss and I are getting iPhones this week. Actually, I have mine
today. I can pick up my mail from our server on the iPad and iPhone,
but I am concerned about keeping our data usage down. We often get
maps and large PDF documents via email.
- is there a program or service or app that you use to filter your
email to avoid large attachment downloads?
- how does the iphone handle email? Does it only download headers
until you open the email? Does it only download attachments if you
click on them? Or does it download everything immediately?

Re: [iPad] Email
Will you be using Wi-Fi? If you're using Wi-Fi, it doesn't count against your data usage.
