Thanks for the reminder, Bob--I've heard of Data Rescue. I'll try their demo as soon as I get the drive back from the store and buy it if it looks like it can find what we need.

Apple used to include Tech Tool Pro with Macs, but I have not seen it around lately.

I had a horrendously bad experience with Norton Utilities back in my PC days (ca.1988) and have been very careful ever since.

Does anyone have a line on an inexpensive enclosure for MBPro drives, since I'll need one for housing the drive when it comes back to me? I have one for older larger drives but I'm betting the small size calls for something different.

I just ordered a firewire 800 to 400 cable from Monoprice.com. Those guys are really reasonable on both prices and shipping costs.
