Touch that little square  symbol above the window you want gone And iMessage will open asking you if you want to delete all the tabs and do that

Thanks for the help, but I already tried in the area that you showed in the pic. Didn't work. I had also turned off the split screen option or whatever they called it in the settings. That didn't work either.

My X is very small in the top right hand corner of the 'new' screen.  I hate that option too!!!
