I tried that, too, and it didn't change a thing.  I'm going to try what Carl told me about and see if that works, and if not, guess I'll have no other choice than to call the Apple store.  Thanks, Pat!

Did you try the "Forget this Network" setting on the device and then setting it up again? You'll have to put in your password.

Just wanted to let the people who replied to my original question know about the progress I've made.  I did as Jim suggested and updated via iTunes.  It worked perfectly with no hitches at all, so at least my iPhone 5 has iOS7 now!  Thanks, Jim.
 
Don't know just what I should do about the WiFi issue, though.  I've re-set the network several times, but can't get either the router/modem or the repeater to connect (I always get one of two notices, "this network can't be found," or "dismiss this network."  I guess I'll have to call a technician to get some help on this.  What an annoyance!
