The network (extender) comes up fine, then I click on it, it asks for the password.  I enter that and then get a message saying it can't find this network.  It also can't find the router/modem network.  It is really maddening!  I have never had any problems with my iPhone 4S, my husband the same, and both of our iPads are also connected.  I have so far tried everything suggested except for calling Apple or our Internet provider, but that's probably what I'll have to do.  I really appreciate everyone's help.

Can you see the network and just can't connect to it or can't you even see it?  Maybe try entering the SSID and the password manually?

I'm not so sure my WiFi issues have anything to do with the particular iOS, Pete, because my other devices don't have them at all, not in iOS 6 or 7.  And my iPhone 5 has had this problem from almost the very beginning.  Strangely enough, WiFi worked for a few weeks, but then stopped, and I could never get it working again.  Now that I have iOS 7, I want it to work, so I have to find the solution.

iOS 6 had WiFi issues for about two months which is why I haven't upgraded to iOS 7 yet.

Just wanted to let the people who replied to my original question know about the progress I've made.  I did as Jim suggested and updated via iTunes.  It worked perfectly with no hitches at all, so at least my iPhone 5 has iOS7 now!  Thanks, Jim.
 
Don't know just what I should do about the WiFi issue, though.  I've re-set the network several times, but can't get either the router/modem or the repeater to connect (I always get one of two notices, "this network can't be found," or "dismiss this network."  I guess I'll have to call a technician to get some help on this.  What an annoyance!
