Carol,  I agree.  The default iOS7 background is terrible in providing good visibility and contrast for the new icons…..BUT ….  After I changed the background from that to the optional 'still' background with dark starry night picture,  the contrast improved remarkably for me.  Now I rather like it.  

 

I could have been persuaded to wait,  or just gripe about the new iOS7,  but unfortunately it is the future,  we have little choice,  and if I want to proceed in this direction I have little choice.   Other than the still crappy Apple Maps APP,  I think I will easily overcome other changes to iOS7 and grow to like it.

Screen contrast is pretty bad. What I have done is take a photo of a deep red and used that, then I switched to black, which looks quite cool with my black phone.
Using a photo is easier on iPads.
