my advice is to wait as long as possible before connecting with the internet.

answer:
if you switch to the mac you have a lot of preinstalled programs from apple for all your "working with media" needs. To create (simple) greeting cards for example, try iPhoto.
Play with the other "iLife" applications too.
And THEN connect to the Internet with your MacBook for the first time. You have used and seen some very good Mac-Apps (because they are from Apple) and know now IF and WHICH (free or paid) extra applications you need.

> Good evening,I am going to make the switch to a mac. Ordered an MBP and expect it to arrive soon. Maybe Tuesday. And I'm a bit worried. I won't know what to do with it. And at first I won't have internet. I have a dial up connection now and will get wi fi after I get a bit familiar with the mac.I saw macupdate mentioned this evening and have been exploring there. I can see that I can get some free programs there and I assume this is considered a safe place to download from.I like to make greeting cards and have used Microsoft Picture It Publishing for years. Are there any good free or low cost programs for this? Are there other good places to find software? Thanks Karen
