Thanks for the reply. I was using a router with an external Access Point, so I decided to invest in a router with wireless built in and that seems to have solved the problem. The router/AP combo it quite elderly and even though I kept the firmware up-to-date, I guess I needed something more up-to-date.
Well. How about no password but only allowing specific Mac assesses for the devices that will connect.
