Actually, I am inUK, but clearly it is the same the world over!

I do have a 3G iPad and a 3G personal Wi-Fi, but no 3G coverage

I think you may be discovering just how bad many if not most public hotspots in the US are.  I've had poor service in coffeeshops, restaurants, libraries, and, recently, a hotel.  If you ask for help, you're not likely to get any.  They're not unfriendly - they just neither know what to do nor care much.

I'm *very* glad I have a 3G.  Even when wifi sort of works, 3G is often faster.

It's deplorable.

I can log on using the supplied password but then ten system freezes with the error message that "Drop down windows must be enabled". I have enabled drop down windows in  Safari but that does not seem to help.

The hotel staff are not well informed except to say tat this problem has occurred before
