I don't have any experience of the sourceforge free version, I've not tried it. I've used NTFS for Mac since switching over from pc a couple of years ago, it enables me to continue using an ntfs drive to transfer data from work pcs to my macs. I can say that it has worked flawlessly for me, although i've literally only used it for data transfer ... i've not done any disc formatting.
I only retain one drive as ntfs, simply to do the file transfers. All my own drives are now hfs+ formatted.
