Yah, it's a distortion of the natural and necessary human need to be constantly improving things. Excess negativity may come as a result of the excess stress produced by modern life, which in turn comes from increased uncertainty, constantly shifting goals and values. Blame somebody or something for my unhappiness. I'm feeling frustrated? F*ing Windows 8!
