I think the key here is that Pat installed the ad-free paid version and
only after that was installed was the free version deleted -- that
ensures that all the data, etc. remained intact.

I think that if the free version is deleted first you run the risk of
losing all your data (wins, losses, etc.) unless you're very careful.
Better to install the new version and then delete the older version, in
my opinion.
