I don't like having to go into Settings to adjust volume, mute, or brightness, although it's easier with Rapid App Switching than before.

The way 4.2.1 has it set up, I have a slider easily available for brightness (a quick double-tap and slide), and one for over-all volume, and - separately - an on/off switch for system sounds.

I definitely prefer this to having an on/off switch for music or movie soundtrack (if I want to quickly mute those things, I probably also want to pause the movie or music), and a slider for system sounds (I have their volume set; I either want them on or off, no need to adjust their volume frequently).

I'd use a mute switch on the ipad in the same way I'd use it for the stereo or the TV - in case the phone rang, someone came into the room, or I thought I heard a jet plane heading for my house but wasn't sure.  In those cases, I'd want the switch to be immediately identifiable, reachable and responsive.  I would not want to have to figure out where it was in the application I happened to be using, then slide it to zero carefully.  A hardware slide switch was a perfect fit for those needs; a hidden software slider isn't.  I can certainly live with this, but for me, Apple got it right on the first try and wrong on review.
