Personal preference.  I don't like hitting a hard switch unless it's an emergency.  Punching a button twice when it has as much resistance as the home button does feels almost manic.  When there's no rush, one soft tap is much nicer.  And hard switches wear out.

I don't go into settings to adjust volume and brightness.  I quickly double tap the menu button, then flick to scroll to the left and there are the controls.  With my apple case on, I found it hard to do the buttons on the side (arthritic hands) and this is much easier for me and nearly as quick.
